Game Day Food: Aloha Dogs

This blog post was sponsored by KING’S HAWAIIAN® but the opinions are all my own.

These Aloha Dogs are the perfect Game Day food. Gather up the football fans, turn on the TV and get ready for everyone to inhale these mouthwatering and super easy to prepare Hawaiian hot dogs.

When I think of football, a few things come to mind: friends, fall, fun, and FOOD. Definitely food. There’s something very special about Game Day food isn’t there? Usually, when we have people over I’ll fix a crock pot of pulled pork and serve pulled pork sliders on KING’S HAWAIIAN® Original Hawaiian Sweet Dinner Rolls. These are my go-to rolls for entertaining. I’ve even been known to make mini-sandwiches with them for my kids’ lunches. #MomWin

But this year I thought I’d mix things up a bit. Instead of sliders, I headed to my local HEB and picked up KING’S HAWAIIAN® Hot Dog buns in the bakery section for the base of my little creation – Aloha Dogs.

With my shopping cart in hand, I loaded it up with all of the ingredients for these delicious Hawaiian Hot Dogs:

  • KING’S HAWAIIAN® Hot Dogs Buns
  • Red onion
  • Red Pepper
  • Green Pepper
  • Pineapple
  • Cilantro
  • Green onions
  • Hot Dogs
  • Plus my secret special ingredients that send these over the top –> KING’S HAWAIIAN® Original Sweet Pineapple BBQ Sauce

Did you know KING’S HAWAIIAN® has BBQ sauces? They do and they’re incredible. The Original Sweet Pineapple BBQ sauce has a bold BBQ flavor with a sweet bite from the pineapple. It was exactly what these hot dogs needed.

Here’s how I made them:

Mix slices of red onion with the KING’S HAWAIIAN® Original Sweet Pineapple BBQ Sauce.

Cook the red onions in a cast iron skillet, which will give them a little bit of char. After the onions have cooked for 2 to 3 minutes, push them to the side and add the pineapple rounds (I used fresh, not canned). Cook them for about 2 minutes per side until they get nice and brown.

Set the red onions aside. Cut the pineapple rounds into small chunks and mix with the chopped green onions, green pepper, red pepper and cilantro. This is your pineapple salsa and let me tell you, it’s incredible and full of flavor.

Grill the hot dogs.

To assemble the Aloha Dogs, place a hot dog in a hot dog bun. Then scoop on top some of the pineapple salsa and the red onions you mixed with the BBQ sauce.

Get ready for a flavor explosion! The sweetness of the red onion/BBQ mixture plus the crunch from the pineapple salsa plus the softness of the KING’S HAWAIIAN® Hot Dog Buns make this one amazing meal. You can also add a little bit more BBQ sauce on top of the hot dogs, which is what my husband did.

Are you ready to grab an Aloha Dog and cheer on your favorite team? I know I am! I also know I’ll be making these again and sharing with family & friends.

3 Ways to Tie a Skinny Scarf

Last fall the skinny scarf trend starting catching on and we were seeing those little pieces of fabric on style mavens everywhere. It carried over into the summer months for some, and I’m happy to say I’ve seen the trend continuing. While I didn’t try the tied neck scarf style that became super popular last year, I am all about the skinny scarf this fall.

I’ve teamed up with Take Time for Style for Moms Do Fall Fashion. Each day these lovely ladies are sharing how they do fall fashion and linking to other stylish moms who are giving their take on it as well. Plus, they’re giving away a $250 Nordstrom gift card, so you don’t want to miss out on that! Head over here to enter.

Moms Do Fall Fashion

3 Ways to Tie a Skinny Scarf

Since the Texas heat continues long after the calendar has announced fall’s arrival, tall boots, sweaters and blanket scarves are saved for deep into winter. But by mid-September, I am so done with summer fashion and ready to break out fall’s wonderful styles. So in order to beat the heat, but still celebrate fall, wearing a skinny scarf is the way to go.

Last September I shared 3 blanket scarf outfit ideas and how to tie one. And just like there are several different ways to tie one of those, there are several different ways to tie a skinny scarf.

When I went shopping for a skinny scarf,  I still had this post in mind, where I shared how to pair navy and burgundy together for fall. I am still absolutely loving this color combo and most likely you’ll see it pop up a time or two in the coming months. Since I had those colors on my mind, this skinny scarf from Target jumped out at me.

skinny-scarf-target

In all three pictures, I’m wearing the skinny scarf with my J. Jill cap sleeve tunic I’ve worn countless times (see it styled here), Max Jeans from last season and a pair of ankle boots I’ll be sharing about in a couple of weeks.

Here are three different ways to tie a skinny scarf.

Once around the neck

Fall Outfit idea: Pair a skinny scarf with a tunic, jeans and ankle boots. See three different ways to tie a skinny scarf for different looks.

This is the most popular way to tie a skinny scarf and one I’m sure you’ve seen in fashion magazines and on street style blogs. I thought to have it that close around my neck would bother me, but because the scarf is so lightweight, I almost forgot I was wearing it after awhile.

One plus of a skinny scarf is you can easily wear it with a cardigan or blazer. It doesn’t add any bulkiness to your outfit and it’s a really nice compliment to your fall wardrobe.

Once around the neck and tied loosely

Fall Outfit idea: Pair a skinny scarf with a tunic, jeans and ankle boots. See three different ways to tie a skinny scarf for different looks.

I think this ended up being my favorite way to wear a skinny scarf. It gives your outfit a polished look, with a menswear feel to it. You could wear it this way with a white button up and fitted black blazer.

Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was spotted last fall in the LAX airport sporting this look. This means her and I are basically twins. 😉

Wrapped loosely around neck

Fall Outfit idea: Pair a skinny scarf with a tunic, jeans and ankle boots. See three different ways to tie a skinny scarf for different looks.

If having the scarf wrapped so closely around your neck makes you start hyperventilating, you can wrap it once very loosely for an easy breezy casual look.

Do you like the look? Shop some skinny scarves below.

Take vitamins customized for you (and delivered to your door!)

I was introduced to vitafive awhile back and am just now getting  around to telling you about this great company. I have struggled for years with finding the right vitamins for me.

During my pregnancy days, each doctor would try to put me on pre-natal vitamins and I would tell each doctor my body couldn’t handle them. I’ve tried prescribed vitamins, over the counter vitamins and continued to have issues finding ones that worked for me. I have always struggled with taking pills, so a large vitamin going down my throat has never been good. But most of the chewable or gummy vitamins I found were just for kids.

Until now….Here’s how vitafive works:

I’ve been taking the beauty pack and I love the taste, the ease and there’s something very rewarding about opening that little pack with my name on it. The beauty pack contains 2 Biotin, 1 Vitamin C, and 1 Omega-3 to strengthen your hair, skin, and nails while reducing cellular signs of aging.

vitafive is perfect for busy moms who need to get out the door fast and often forget to take their vitamins. You can keep a few packs in your purse or at work and always have them available to take every day. Plus, since they are mailed to you every four weeks, you don’t have to remember to pick them up from the store.

Like their slogan says, it’s “Health without the hassle.

Go here to build your own pack or select from one of their pre-formulated packs.

Use an app to remind yourself to drink more water

Drink more water

Without a doubt, if I have a bad headache, feel tired, feel hungry all the time and find myself reaching for unhealthy snacks, I can point it back to not drinking enough water. I know what I feel like hydrated and what I feel like when I’m not.

The bottom line is: most of us don’t drink enough water.

I remember reading this article back in  2013 about a woman who did an experiment. She drank 3 liters of water a day for a month and says it took 10 years off. Obviously, that peaked my interest! She started the experiment because of poor digestion and constant headaches, and after her neurologist recommended she drink more water. The results she had were very surprising to her.

Now, three liters is a lot of water and this is definitely something that should be discussed with your doctor first. But, reading that article encouraged me to at least start being more mindful about drinking water.

Since my phone is usually around me most of the time, an app to help remind me to drink water makes perfect sense. I’ve been using Waterlogged, which is a free app for iPhone users. There are a lot of water app choices out there, so you have plenty to pick from!

Are you a mindful water drinker? If so, let me know how you remind yourself to drink up!

Designer Handbags: Splurge or Save – You Decide!

Do you own any designer handbags? I own one and it wasn’t until I got my hands on it that I realized what the fuss was all about. I use it non-stop and it’s like that best friend that never lets you down and is always there when you need her. Did I just compare a handbag to a best friend? Why yes, yes I did.

While I think designer handbags have their place in a woman’s wardrobe, I’m also very practical. For myself personally, one or two splurges is perfect when it comes to something that carries around my everyday necessities. After my splurges, it’s back to practicality and more affordable handbags.

Self-Care Saturdays: Unpacking Our Bags

Self-Care Saturdays is a series where I share thoughts from the heart, as well as tips and tricks for taking care of you. Self-care looks different for everyone. How do you take care of YOU?

Self Care for Women

medianet_width=’600′; medianet_height= ‘120’; medianet_crid=’843968254′; http://contextual.media.net/nmedianet.js?cid=8CU8WO3LW

Have you ever woken up one day and realized you just weren’t yourself and possibly haven’t been for quite some time. Or you read something that hit you between the eyes and made you realize something? Well, that was me a few days ago. I was reading an email from one of my favorite self-improvement blogs. The title of the email was “One Insanely Popular Way to Waste a Life“. Catchy right? What is this insanely popular way to waste a life you ask?

“We waste our lives with a lack of self-discipline.”

WOW. I read that and it hit me. I have a serious lack of self-discipline and need to make some changes ASAP. I’ve been on a downward spiral of a complete lack of self-discipline for the past few months, but I wasn’t sure why until I had a conversation with my husband about this email.

I was talking to him about it and kind of out of nowhere I looked at him and said, “I still haven’t unpacked my bag from when we took Hannah to college.” That trip was three weeks ago and there it sat, in my closet, unpacked. I was telling him how disorganized I’ve become and I wasn’t sure why. I mean I had an unpacked bag in my closet with clothes I wear quite often just sitting there! What is WRONG with me?!

That’s when he looked at me and said, “Do you think this unpacked bag has a deeper meaning?” And that’s when the tears came. After the tears, came the realization that I missed my daughter so much I couldn’t even handle unpacking my bag. And because of this, I’ve been functioning in a bit of a fog for months. First, because of the anticipation of her leaving and then because of the realization she was gone.

After I had a little bit of a good cry, I looked up at my husband and said, “I also haven’t showered in two days.” That’s when he took my hand, helped me up from my office chair and said, “First go shower. Second, go unpack that bag.

The simple act of realizing what was making me feel so down and unmotivated, and then unpacking that bag, made a huge difference in how I felt. Sure, I still miss my daughter terribly and am counting down the days until we go visit her, but I felt a surge of energy because I was able to nail down what was bothering me and then take one small action step.

Step one to getting back on track to a life I loved living was admitting what was bothering me. Step two was taking some action – unpacking that bag. Step three was slowly introducing habits back into my life that I’ve let go. (Um, like showering maybe?)

What ‘bag’ have you not unpacked yet?

Are you hitting snooze over and over again in the mornings because you just can’t face the day? Is there a strained relationship in your life you know you need to let go of but you just haven’t made that first step? Is your house so disorganized you don’t even know where to begin, so you just keep piling stuff on top of the other piles of stuff? Are you grabbing dinner at the drive-through window because you still have an empty fridge and no meal plan?

Making changes doesn’t happen overnight. I know you know that. It happens by taking little steps and those little steps add up to one giant step. Those steps all lead to change.

Self Care for Women

Keep hitting snooze? Give yourself something to look forward to in the morning like your favorite breakfast food or coffee creamer. Set your alarm to wake you up with your favorite song. Get a wake-up accountability partner.

Strained relationship? Give yourself permission to not answer their texts for a couple of days. Write down why this relationship is such a strain and why it’s so hard to let it go. Talk to someone who’s detached from this particular relationship and tell them you just need them to listen.

Disorganized house? Pick the one thing that drives you the craziest and do something about it. Is your closet a mess? Straighten your shoes. Is your kitchen sink always full of dirty dishes? Take care of them the night before. Is your schedule a mess? Let go of one thing.

Self Care for Women

Eating out too much? Plan one meal and shop for it. Make sure it’s something easy and that you know everyone likes. You could even make a double batch and freeze it for later, or eat it for leftovers the next day.

Realizing what’s bothering you + Small steps = Big change.

Now, let’s go unpack those bags, shall we?

Affordable Men’s Products to Up Their Grooming Game This Fall

Sponsored post by Mirum Shopper. All opinions are my own. Unilever is the NCAA partner, not Walmart.

With a change in seasons, comes the need for a change in grooming habits. For myself personally, my skin gets drier and I have to use a lotion with a little more oomph. My hair also gets drier, so I’ll often use a leave-in conditioner and do hair masks a couple of times a month.

Men's Grooming products fit for football season.

The same goes for the men in my life. Whether they’re cheering on their favorite college team at the stadium or yelling at the TV from the comfort of their own home, a change in season (a.k.a. football season) means it’s time to upgrade their grooming game.

I’ve teamed up with Unilever to chat affordable and effective men’s grooming products available at Walmart. It’s a brand I know well and have trusted both for myself and my family.

Take care of your turf

I’m usually the one that buys grooming products for the guys in my home, so I’ve come to learn what they like and what they don’t. In order to provide them with grooming products that work, but ones that don’t kill our grocery budget, I’ve come to rely on Unilever Men’s products.

I still remember when both Dove and Suave came out with their very own men’s line. Early on in our marriage, my husband and I would share shampoo and conditioner. We just used what was available, with no consideration to the possibility we had different grooming needs. When I first brought home Suave Men, my husband balked at it a little, but after using it for awhile he was hooked and now it’s his go-to product.

He likes the 3-in-1 shampoo + conditioner + bodywash. He also has a great sense of humor, as noted by a recent Facebook post of his. (Used with permission of course. 😛 )

My boys (17 and 12) really like the Dove Men + Care face washes and the Axe body sprays. They currently have three face washes in the shower and I’m not even sure how many body sprays. My youngest son says it gives him, and I quote, “a necessary variety.” Works for me!

Unilever Men's productsHere are a few of their favorites:

AXE Black Body Spray – This refined and subtle fragrance combines notes of bergamot, rosemary and cedar wood allowing you to make an impression without going over the top. A single spritz to the pulse points on your wrists, forearms and neck is all you need.

Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort Body and Face Wash – Dermatologist recommended Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort Body Wash uses unique MICROMOISTURE technology, which activates on lathering, helping to lock in your skin’s natural moisture and leaving skin feeling hydrated. The shower gel washes away quickly without leaving residue behind. This noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic men’s body wash will leave you with a clean body and a refreshing scent and keep your skin stay healthy, hydrated and protected against irritation and dryness.

Suave Men Ocean Charge 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner – Our 2-in-1 Ocean Charge Shampoo and Conditioner cleans and conditions your hair all in one step. Designed for the specific needs of men’s hair, it’s salon proven to clean hair as well as American Crew® Moisturizing Shampoo.

Degree Men Adventure Deodorant – Degree Extra Fresh Adventure deodorant stick offers 24-hour odor protection for your daily adventure. A rugged, woodsy scent blended with citrus and a hint of musk.
